Standard negation

Quenya has two main ways to form a negative clause:

• negation adverb ú
• zero quantifiers, such as úquen nobody, úlume never, etc (→ 31).

Quenya differs somewhat from English in how these two methods interact with each other.

Rule

If a zero quantifier is present, then it takes precedence over the negation adverb (→ PE23/99).

1.   úquen túle hai ‘nobody arrived on time’
2.    ú melden úquen ambe lá·se ‘Túro didn’t arrive on time’
3.  cennenye·s úlume ‘I have never seen him’
4.  cennenye úquen ‘I didn’t see anyone’ (lit. ‘I saw nobody’)
